  2. Allied Leaders • Big Three allied leaders: • Winston Churchill: Great Britain • Franklin Roosevelt: US • Joseph Stalin: Soviet Union • Met throughout to plan strategy and later to make post – war plans.

  3. Franklin D. Roosevelt • Good Neighbor Policy: Withdrawing armed forces from Latin American neighboring • Lowered trade barriers & tariffs • Against isolationism; wanted to help the Allies but had to appease US citizens who opposed war. • Dwight D. Eisenhower – European Front • Douglas Mac – Arthur – Pacific Front

  4. Winston Churchill • Angry with Chamberlain’s signing of the Munich Pact • Neville Chamberlain – Prime Minster of Great Britain before Churchill. • Appeasement – giving up principles to pacify an aggressor (Hitler) • Feels that the Great Britain and France are simply trying to appease Hitler.

Joseph Stalin • Soviet Union • Communism – economic and political system based on one – party government and state ownership of property. • 5 yr plan – agriculture and becoming an industrial world power were Stalin’s main goals. • Signed the Non – aggression Pact with Germany allowing to take over Poland without interfering and then agreeing to divide Poland between them.

US stays neutral • Neutrality Acts: Congress passed a series of neutrality acts designed to prevent war based on America’s experiences prior to their entrance into World War I. • Dealing with the Great Depression, unwilling and unprepared to become involved in events overseas. • Prohibited the sales of arms or lending of money to countries involved in any military action.
