Community Garden • What is a community garden? • Any piece of land gardened by a group of people • Can be urban, suburban or rural • Includes flowers or vegetables • Someplace where people from the community can go and enjoy • Some cost a fee (including memberships) and others are free • Benefits of Community Gardens • Improves the quality of life for people in the garden • Stimulates social interaction • Beautifies neighborhoods • Creates opportunity for recreation, therapy and education • Provides opportunities for intergenerational connections Source: http://www.communitygarden.org/learn/

  3. Community Garden • Community Garden Facts: • Started back from the 1700’s • Worldwide • Also known as “victory gardens” • Depression-era relief • Popular during social & economic change • Contains vegetables, herbs, flowers, or a combination • Any age can help

Coon Rapids Community Garden • Service Completed – Coon Rapids Community Garden • Why did we choose this? • Help people in the community • Gardening tasks • Health • More people walking on the path • Help the environment • Get to know the people in our community • When did we go to the garden? • Weeknights after 5pm • What flowers were planted? • Marigolds, Snapdragons, Pansies, Petunias, Cosmos, Iris, Ivy, Day Lilies, Liams, Geraniums, Colorado Strawberries & Hostas.

Coon Rapids Community Garden • Who runs the garden? • Elaine • She has been doing it for 14 years – ever since she retired. • She started in a small area and it has now grown to be a block long. • No one in the area does a garden this size • Does not get paid to do it • Nurseries donate flowers • Elaine picks the flowers from her own garden • Does not get paid to do it • Participants • Elaine Burgess • Bill Caverley • Wanda

  8. ISSUE/TOPIC • Reduce Stress • Reduce Crime • Site should be observable by nearby residents • Transform vacant land • Challenges other communities to interact with each other • Slow down traffic • Creating a pleasant environment causes people not to want to speed past

TIMELINE • Decided to do Meals on Wheels • Final decision to do community garden in Coon Rapids • Planned to start on a Sunday • Day of Tornados • Official start was on a Monday • Filled pots, planted seeds and flowers • Went to the garden again on Thursday • Continued to go a couple more times

WHAT WAS LEARNED?HOW HAS IT CHANGED OR AFFECTED US? • Appreciate the community we live in • Gardens can bring people together • Different genders and ages able to work together because of common goal • Story of woman picking flowers • Gardens can be a place of healing • Story of man on garden bench • Volunteers do this so others in the community enjoy it • Volunteering is a great way to feel good
