  3. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Quarter system – progress reports every 4 ½ weeks. Report cards every 18 weeks. Cumulative grade on the end of year report card. Standards-based grading -Formative/Summative -Quarterly Assessments ABCD schedule – A/B/C/D weeks- Students will have every class every day but at a different time each week.

  5. CORE ACADEMIC CLASSES- Language Arts Curriculum The 6th grade Language Arts curriculum is engaging and exciting!! Our goal is to relate Language Arts to real-world experiences and to enable students to enjoy learning about our language.

  6. Language Arts (continued)‏ Topics Which Will be Taught in the Classroom Language Standards Pronouns Conventions-Capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Vocabulary acquisition Reading Standards-Fiction, informational texts, poetry, and drama Writing Standards-Argumentative, informative, narrative, and research projects

  11. CORE ACADEMIC CLASSES- Literacy/Title I Literacy/Title I placement will be determined by 2013 CRCT scores and current reading and math fluency/comprehension and writing levels.

LMMS Academic Support Services Horizons / Advanced– recommended by 5th grade teachers currently offering Language Arts, Science, and Math Special Education – for students identified as needing additional academic support ESOL– English for Speakers of Other Languages Guidance and Counseling- academic and career guidance and social/emotional support services

SUPPORT SERVICES-Horizons at LMMS What classes do we plan to offer? 6th grade – Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, Literacy 7th and 8th grade – Language Arts, Science and Social Studies, Advanced & Accelerated Math How does the content differ from regular education classes? Increased rigor from Common Core Standards In addition to this increased rigor, Horizons classes will also include the following: Faster pace of instruction Research, data/gathering project required Related material not in the standards Higher level questioning skills Differentiated assessment including project based assessment Individual choice of selected novel studies Less direct instruction for each specific skill Preview or introduction of standards from upper grade levels

  14. SUPPORT SERVICES-Horizons / Accelerated Classes for students who are identified as gifted according to state criteria. Testing for Horizons is conducted based on test scores and teacher/parent recommendations Elementary School model Delivery model - Pull out, in addition to regular content courses. Enrichment: may not be tied to standards ALL gifted students served in the same one or two content areas Little Mill Horizons model Delivery model - Advanced content: takes the place of regular content classes Content – Aligned to state content standards PLUS Enrichment/Extension Grading – Standard content grading (90-100 = A)

SUPPORT SERVICES-Special Education Math Literacy Language Arts We offer a continuum of services ranging from consult to self-contained classes as determined by the individual needs addressed in your child’s IEP. Transition meetings are held with elementary schools and parents before students come to middle school.

STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAM-Counseling Department The Counseling Department seeks to provide services for students, parents, teachers and school staff that will help to develop the many areas of a student's needs, including their personal, social and educational development. Counselors provide the following to students: Mentoring Program Group Counseling Individual Counseling Classroom Guidance Homeroom Ambassadors Program Career Exploration, GA College 411 Transition Activities

  18. ACADEMIC PROGRAM- Connections and PE Students rotate randomly through the following connections: ArtTechnology Drama P.E. Music Health Computer Literacy Band and Chorus are optional year-long classes For students taking P.E. Uniforms required ($20-$25); Locks for PE lockers required ($3)‏

  19. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES/ Sports You have to be in 7th or 8th grade to play on the LMMS teams; We do offer intramurals to 6th grade students. Football Basketball Track Golf Cheerleading

AGENDA USE • All students are required to purchase an agenda for $5 at the beginning of the school year and use it on a daily basis. • Students are required to carry it at all times. • Media Center barcode is attached to the agenda • Includes the student handbook and used as a hall pass when signed by a teacher.

  22. AGENDA USE (continued)‏ All students are encouraged and expected to use it as a daily planner to keep track of assignments and activities. Parents should check it each evening to keep informed about class work and homework.

  25. PARENT PORTALWhat is it? How to use it? What is the Parent Portal? Parent Portal is our tool for parents and students to access instant, online, timely and secure student information: class schedule, grades, attendance, discipline, course registrations for next year, report cards and transcripts. Campus Portal is a means to further promote educational excellence by enhancing our program of communication with parents and students.

  29. PTO versus PTA • Little Mill PTO is run by you – the parents and teachers. We do not pay dues or other fees to a national umbrella. • All fundraising money is used toward Little Mill.

  31. Meetings The PTO meets on the 1st Thursday of each month at 9:15 a.m. Meetings are usually one hour. You do not have to attend PTO meetings to be actively involved at Little Mill.
