  5. Naming Acids – Single Ions • HF (aq) = hydroflouric acid • HCl (aq) = Hydrochloric acid • HBr (aq) = hydrobromic acid • H2S (aq) = hydrosulfuric acid

  6. Naming Acids – Polyatomic Ions • Hydrogen + Polyatomic Ion • Name of the polyatomic anion + -ic acid

  7. Naming Acids – Polyatomic • Example: • HNO3 • Nitrate Ion nitric acid • H2SO4 • Sulfate Ion Sulfuric acid

  8. Bases • All bases are formed by an ionic bond between • cation (metal) and • hydroxide (OH-) ion

  9. Naming Bases Examples: • NaOH (aq) Sodium hydroxide • Ca(OH)2 (aq) Calcium hydroxide • Mg(OH)2 (aq) Magnesium hydroxide
