  3. D-Tree background • Vision - is a world in which every person has access to high quality healthcare • Mission - is to provide health workers with the tools they need to deliver this care worldwide • Founded in 2004 with 3 staff in US and 8 in Tanzania

  4. D-tree background… • Community health workers are the front line of the health system, yet face high turnover and often have little training • Challenges also exist in collecting and reporting data • We build mobile applications to reinforce the training to the CHWs and to assist our partners in monitoring and managing the CHWs

  5. D-Tree background… • Current projects in Tanzania • BRAC – 50 CHWs in Dodoma (safe pregnancy and HIV/AIDS) • PATH – 6 CHWs and 4 facility users in Kisarawe (TB) • CRS – 35 CHWs in Arusha (OVC) • JHPIEGO – Maternal and child health in Morogoro (planned pilot this year)

  6. Project Details Objective To improve service delivery and management of home based care (HBC) programs through the use of mobile applications.

  7. Challenges that CommCare is trying to address • Paper work – compiling reports

  9. Features CommCare Key Features: • Registration of new clients • Follow –up of existing clients • Issuing referrals to existing clients • Reminders to complete pending referrals

  14. Results to date • 75 users trained • 42 in 2009 and 33 in 2010 • 950 visits made using Commcare

  15. Lessons learned • Privacy is important for both clients & CHWs • Involve users opinion when developing tools • Best feedback from inexperienced users • Keep the application Simple

  16. Way forward • Goal • 115 CHWs on CommCare by the end of September 2010 • How? • Two more scale-up phases • July - 42 more HBCPs on CommCare • August – 40 more HBCPs on CommCare
