RRM MIB Variable Structures Byoung-Jo "J" Kim AT&T Labs-Research Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Easy things First • In the order of difficulty of Standardizing • Passively Observed Parameters during normal operation • CCA, RSSI, Noise Power, Frame Counts, States, MAC addresses, Beacons, etc. • Trending them? • Transfer of Parameters between STA to AP: 11h-like.. • SNMP to STA over Radio is not desired nor workable • Need Request/Response over Air • Can be used for Actively Measured Parameters • Actively Measured Parameters • May need a way to Quiet the medium • Control • AP Requesting Change of Config/Behavior of its STAs • External Entity communication via SNMP or modified IAPP? Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Step-by-Step Standardization? • First, Define and Add “Passively Observable” Parameters to 802.11 MIB • Standard Impact Minimal • Non-AP STAs may start recording upon request from AP • This Presentation is limited to this • While the above is being balloted • Transfer of Parameters between STA to AP • Actively Measured Parameters: extend TGh? • May Need some architectural thinking • While the above is being balloted • Work on Control Issues: Maybe a next TG • Definitely Need some architectural thinking Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Distinguish AP and non-AP STA in MIB? • Some parameters make sense only for APs • Some parameters make sense only for non-AP STAs • SNMP to STAs not desirable nor feasible • Current MIB does not have anything specific for AP • but all APs are STAs • RRM should distinguish them “Explicitly”? • Any implications to other part of 802.11? • RRM should distinguish them “Implicitly”? • Potentially Confusing, but fits the current 802.11 MIB Architecture mostly (11f added some AP specifics) • “This Presentation takes this approach” Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Passively Observed Parametersinto 802.11 MIB • Current 802.11 MIB has the following sub-branches • dot11smt, dot11mac, dot11res, dot11phy, dot11Conformance • Current 802.11 MIB has some Per-Interface Stats: dot11CountersTable) under dot11mac: • Extend/Replace with dot11macStatsTable for per Interface stats beyond the current MAC counters? • Extend doc11phy/dot11phyDSSSTable and dot11phyOFDMTable for PHY stats? • New Per-STA table is needed: dot11STAStatsTable under dot11mac & dot11phy? • One Private MIB had this under “Forwarding Table”, containing corresponding MAC addresses : Reasonable place but out of 802.11 scope? • Another Private MIB has this under “Association Table”, which excludes STA observed but not associated, or other APs • Need to include all known STAs, APs, regardless of association Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Before & AfterJust Examples... • Current 802.11 MIB has the following sub-branches Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Current 802.11 MIB has some Per-Interface Stats under dot11mac Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Important Suggestion! • During this Presentation • Let’s NOT Focus on Particular Variables • I’m not proposing any particular variables, just place holders • Let’s Focus on Overall Structure Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Update the CounterTable with macStatsTable like this? Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Augment like this? • Original PhyDSSSTable Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
Augment with more types? • Original Notifications Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
per-STA table added like this? Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
How to move info between STA to AP? • Proprietary Methods Observed in Current Products for a few parameters • Simple IP level proprietary protocol • Proprietary extension of Management Frames • Need Info from hardware implementers • Naturally leads to Active Measurements • 11h does this for some parameters • Reported parameters from other STAs should go under dot11smt, indexed via integer containing reporters’ address and observed addresss Byoung-Jo "J" Kim, AT&T Labs-Research
