  2. A Tour of Our Lab Laboratory Front Desk These people need to be familiar with all the laboratory tests and also be able to decipher physician hieroglyphics.

  3. Phlebotomy Specimen Collection by Venipuncture (sometimes referred to as Vampires)

  4. Specimen Processing These individuals must understand all lab orders, billing types, and specimen requirements for all testing that comes through the lab. “If it is not done right here, then it does not matter what anyone else does in the lab.”

  5. Chemistry This department is the most automated. The technology is constantly changing.

  6. Automation This analyzer used Kodak slide technology and can run 950 tests per hour. The sample volume necessary to run a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (18 analytes) on just 250 uL of sample (this is approximately 25 drops of serum).

  7. Hematology Complete Blood counts are done on this analyzer. It is even capable of distinguishing the five different types of White Blood Cells. Automated counts are still verified by manual microscopy.

  8. The technologist must examine each slide. He will look at the shape and Size of the Red Blood Cells and count and differentiate the different types Of White Blood Cells and evaluate the platelet numbers.

  9. Urinalysis There are many disease states that can be diagnosed through urinalysis.

  10. The urine tested chemically for glucose, protein, bacteria, white blood Cells, acetone and red blood cells. The it is examined microscopically For cells, crystals, bacteria and casts.

  11. Microbiology In Microbiology organisms are cultured from any body site. Microbiology is one of the least automated departments in the lab but they are getting there.

  12. Blood Bank “Immunohematology” Blood Bank is where all units of blood are typed and tested to determine they are compatible before they are transfused to a patient.

  13. Histology Histology is where tissues are imbedded and cut to one cell layer thick, they are stained and reviewed by pathologists so they can make a diagnosis.

  14. Tissue Lab The tissue lab is where the specimens obtained in surgery are prepared for gross analysis by the pathologists.

  15. Pathology Transcription These Medical Transcriptionists transcribe the Pathologists reports to go out to referring physicians. A High School diploma or equivalent is required and Medical Terminology is preferred They also require at least 60 wpm/typing. Current Salary Range: $11.66 to $17.48/hr.

  17. Quality Assurance and Billing Specialists Quality Assurance Specialists ensure that the results we send out are accurate and by procedure. Billing Specialists ensure that the Billing is timely and accurate.

  18. Pathologists • Clinical Pathologists must complete a M.D. program and then depending on the specialty they choose they must complete a 1 to 4 year accredited residency program.

  19. Medical Technologists BS, MT(ASCP) These individuals are trained to work in all Laboratory Departments (Blood Bank, Microbiology, Serology, Parasitology, Hematology and Chemistry) They must complete a B.S in Medical Technology and usually a minor in Chemistry. They must do a 6 month-1 year internship and then pass a Certification exam. Current Salary Range: $17.93 to $26.89/hr.

  20. Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) These individuals must complete an associates degree or an accredited MLT program and pass a certification exam. Current Salary Range: $14.88 to $22.33/hr.

  21. Histologic Technician HT(ASCP) Histotechnician requires an Associates degree or at least 60 Semester hours of academic credit from a accredited college Or university and one full year acceptable experience in Histopathology. They must pass a certification exam. Current Salary: $14.50 to $21.90/hr. • Histologictechnologist HTL(ASCP) A certified histotechnologist may have a four-year bachelor's degree in histologic technology or complete a histological technology educational program after college. They must pass the certification exam. Current Salary: $17.50 to $26.00/hr.

Clinical Laboratory Assistants There are Clinical Laboratory Assistants it virtually every Lab Department • Laboratory Front Desk • Phlebotomists • Specimen Processing • Microbiology • Histology • Client Services These positions require a High School Diploma or equivalent and are Usually trained on the job the salary range is from $9.60/hr. to $17.00/hr.
