New Strategic Concept and Crisis Management - Overview • No alteration of the core tasks and principles, but adjustment to the dynamics of global security • Emphasis on the nexus between allied security, assistance to fragile states and intervention in crisis areas • Reflects the lessons learned throughout NATO’s advancement in crisis management policies and structures • Broadens the Alliance’s activities (e.g. counterinsurgency, nation-building, humanitarian assistance), thus projecting NATO’s action in a global context • Enables NATO to conduct a plurality of operations simultaneously and in concert with other international actors

Crisis Management Tasks - Progress Report Commitments versus achievements • Enhance intelligence sharing within NATO, to better predict when crisis might occur, and how they can best be prevented • Further develop doctrine and military capabilities for expeditionary operations, including counterinsurgency, stabilization and reconstruction operations • Form an appropriate but modest civilian crisis management capability to interface more effectively with civilian partners • Enhance integrated civilian-military planning throughout the crisis spectrum
