  3. Duty of Care • You now have a ‘Duty of Care’ to ensure the safe and proper disposal or recovery of whatever waste you produce.

  4. Why New Regulations • Comply with European Hazardous Waste Directive 91/689/EEC (HWD) • Ensure safe management of hazardous waste • Identify where the waste is produced • Provide cradle-to-grave documentation of movement of the waste • Set tighter limits on hazardous waste going to landfill (WAC)

  5. Hazardous Waste? Classification Now, all waste with one or more hazardous properties that are hazardous to health or the environment:

  6. Items not previously classed as Special Waste but now classified as Hazardous Waste • Fluorescent Tubes • Televisions • Computer Monitors • Undepoluted end-of-life vehicles

  11. Asbestos • Asbestos removal will most likely be the common reason for having to register a property

Information Required to Register • The address and post code of the property being registered • The number of employees (within a range) • Your Standard Industrial Classification Code (SIC 2003) • Companies House registration number (if you are Ltd or Plc) • A valid e-mail address • A contact phone Number

  15. Exempt Premises To be exempt from registering the premises the following criteria must be met • The amount of waste removed must not exceed 200Kg in total over 12 months • The waste must be removed by registered carrier

  16. How Heavy Is 200Kg • 10 small TVs • 14 Lead acid batteries • 500 Fluorescent tubes • 5 Small domestic fridges

Fly Tipping • One very important exemption is Hazardous Waste that has been Fly-Tipped. • Regulation 22(2) provides that where waste has been deposited in contravention of The Environmental Protection Act 1990 it may be removed without requiring registration of those premises. (consignment notes must still beused in the normal manner)
