EVALUATION OF HIGH DENSITY SURFACE OBSERVATIONS IN COMPLEX TERRAIN AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE MM5 MODEL Capt Paul Homan (Mar 07) Advisors: Dr. Wendell Nuss and Lt Col Karl Pfeiffer Beneficiary: AFWA/XPF, USAFA/DFEG/DFP, USAFA Space Physics and Atmospheric Research Center (SPARC), 25 OWS • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM • How does adding fine scale weather obs from the USAF Academy’s High Wind Alert System (HWAS) enhance a fine scale forecast model (MM5)? • To what extent do surface obs at different elevations provide enhanced structure to features within a mesoscale model? • Assess mesoscale/microscale predictability limits and explore the impact of improved data assimilation and data denial efforts using targeted HWAS obs. • ANTICIPATED RESULTS • Enhanced vertical structure in modeled atmosphere from surface observations in complex terrain. • Better defined and understood mesoscale structures over topography (downslope winds, mountain waves, turbulence). • Development of forecast model using targeted obs and relocatable window for military operations in areas of complex terrain.
