  8. Free Flight • 1804 • Sir George Cayley flew the first model glider, which lead to the development of the first manned flight in a glider of a similar design.

  9. The Need for POWER • John Stringfellow developed a small engine based on a train engine that could be used in an aircraft. • This was too heavy and large to provide the amount of power required for sustained powered flight. • This lead to the invention of the Internal Combustion Engine, which is still in use today in cars, piston engined aircraft etc. • The main pioneer of the single cylinder internal combustion engine was Gottlieb Daimler.

First Powered Flight • The Wright Brothers pioneered controlled, powered flight. • The first flight was on 17 December 1903. • They flew their Wright Flyer 260m. • Orville, the pilot, wrote: “The course of the flight up and down was exceedingly erratic. The control of the front rudder(elevator) was difficult. As a result the machine would rise suddenly to about 10ft and then as suddenly dart for the ground. A sudden dart, when a little over 120ft from the point at which it rose into the air, ended the flight”.

  25. The very Latest!! StephaneRousson (39) At 8 am, on 28 Sep 08, StephaneRousson attempted to cross the English Channel from Hythe in Kent to Wissanin France. The attempt failed 11 miles from the destination due to strong headwinds. He was recovered by boat to France.
