  2. How Ny Alesund works ? KINGSBAY AS – Main logistics for transportation, flights, infrastructures Owns the settlement in Ny-Ålesund Works on behalf of the Norwegian Government Runs and maintains the infrastructures Promotes research and related activities Provides services to visiting scientists RESEARCH STATIONS - ( permanent : Norway, France-Germany, UK, Korea, Japan,China, Italy - non permanent : NL, Spain) – Field logistics and laboratories, computer work. Hosts scientists from their countries, with agreement of respectives Institutions. Can host scientists from other countires. Own rules, own equipment. Each manager is a member of NySMac Group for a better scientific and logistic coordination into Ny Alesund. Kingsbay AS and Research Stations work together for a better efficiency.

Scientific equipment KINGSBAY AS • Modern and high-tech Marine Laboratory + Boat dedicated to science • Wet labs spaces • Chemicals and radioactive chemicals • Lab-Waste management >> Daily fee per person/per equipment RESEARCH STATIONS • Wet and dry laboratories with basic equipment esp. for Marine Research >> Free of charge if agreed with the hosting Institute

  4. >> The Kings Bay Marine Laboratory • Dry and wet lab for regular experiments • Tank rooms for holding and running experiments on marine organisms • Experimental temperature labs supplying variable room temperatures • Ecotox, isotope and tox-free labs • Cooler and freezer for experiments and storage • Diving facilities, scientific boat 7 meters • Outdoor platform • Seminar room

Logistics • Kings Bay AS provides for the hole stations / scientists: • Monthly shipments by cargo boat from Tromsø, Norway (except December to April) • Harbour facilities, including storage • Electricity (220V, 50 HZ) • Internet access (2 x 155Mbt/s) • Accommodation; food and boarding • Crane (30 tons lifting capacity) • Air transportation from Longyearbyen Research Stations provides : - Logistic staff (with competences in Marine activities) • Field logistics (boat, scooters) and safety equipment • Field communication systems (radios, sat phones...) • Diving facilities with competent staff • Storage places (incl. -20, -80°C freezers) • Accomodation and offices computers >> Services free of charge if hosting agreed by the Institute Kingsbay AS and Research Stations work together for a better efficiency.

EPOCA – 2009 Questions to EPOCA : 1 - How many people planned, when, how many days ? 2 - How much equipment on the way in : how, when, dangerous goods ? 3 – Samples back : frozen, not frozen, which volumes ? 4 - About possible cooperations with Stations : which ones ? Bergen >> NP ?, U.K. >> NERC Station ?, (AWI, IPEV >> AWIPEV Station is OK, with adjustments with others sc. Projects). 5 – How do we work together : official links with s.o.? Overviews : • Dates : End of May to 25th June fit the best : overbooked seasons • Number of scientists : Maximum possibilities into Ny Alesund : 20 (KB+AWIPEV+NERC(?)+NP(?)) - Shipments dates : (2008) First shipment into Ny Alesund from Tromso : End of April. 20 feet containers possibilities (Norcargo), then around end of May. Working places : • KB Marine lab possibilities : 20 persons + equipment • Research Stations space lab : wet labs, dry labs (ca. 10 persons ?) Marine Logistics available : 1*small oceanography up to 150m, 4*rubber boats, 1*KB Marine lab boat. Terrestrial logistics available : AWIPEV Car, bikes+trailers KB Crane 30 T, KB wheeloaders
