Smart Snacks in SchoolUSDA’s “All Foods Sold in Schools” Standards Section 208 HHFKA • Interim Final Rule • Implementation July 1, 2014 Purpose: • to improve the health and well-being of the nation’s children • increase consumption of healthful food during the school day • create school environments that reinforce healthy eating habits

  3. Smart Snacks in SchoolUSDA’s “All Foods Sold in Schools” Standards All products SOLD Entire school campus NOT foods served NOT evenings, weekends or community events Entire school day

  4. Smart Snacks in School Vending Machines School Stores Fundraising A la Carte Snack Carts

  5. Any Food Sold in School Must: • be a “whole grain rich” product; OR • have a first ingredient of fruit, vegetable, dairy or protein; OR • be a combination of food that contains at least ¼ cup fruit and/or vegetable; OR • contain 10% of the DV of calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber (Obsolete effective July 1, 2016)

Foods Must Also Meet Several Nutrient Requirements: Calorie limits: - Snack Items: < 200 calories - Entrée items: < 350 calories Sodium limits: - Snack items: < 230 mg - Entrée items: < 480 mg Fat limits: - Total Fat: < 35% of calories - Saturated Fat: < 10% of calories - Trans Fat: zero grams Sugar limits: - < 35% of weight from total sugars in foods

  7. Beverages: All Grades WATER NON FAT MILK LOW FAT MILK (with or without carbonation) (plain or flavored) (plain only) 100% FRUIT OR VEGETABLE JUICE 100% FRUIT OR VEGETABLE JUICE DILUTED W/WATER SERVING SIZE LIMITS: 8 oz. ES 12 oz. MS/HS

  8. Beverages: High School ONLY DIET BEVERAGES (20 oz.) LOW-CALORIE BEVERAGES (12 oz.) (≤40 kcal/8 oz. OR ≤60 kcal/12 oz. ) (<5 kcal/8 oz. OR ≤10 kcal/20 oz.) • NO caffeine restrictions

  9. Examples of what is IN: • baked potato chips • granola bars • cereal bars • trail mix • dried fruits • fruit cups • yogurt • sugarless gum • wholegrain-rich muffins • 100% juice drinks • flavored water (H.S.) • diet sports drinks (H.S.) • unsweetened or diet iced teas (H.S.)

  10. Examples of what is OUT: • candy • snack cakes • most cookies • high-calorie sport drinks • juice drinks that are not 100% juice • most ice cream & ice cream treats • high-fat chips & snacks • pretzels

  11. Fundraisers • The sale of food items that meet nutrition requirements at fundraisers are NOT limited under the new regulations • The standards do not apply during non-school hours, on weekends, and at off-campus fundraising events

Fundraisers (cont.) • Exceptions for fundraiser foods not intended for consumption in schools: Fundraising activities that take place outside of school, such as cookie dough or frozen pizza sales, are exempt from the nutrition standards. Distribution of order forms and foods not intended for consumption at school may continue. • Exemptions? None in NYS • No exempt fundraiser foods or beverages may be sold in competition w/ school meals in the food service area during the meal service
