  2. Outline • Language Arts, Constructivism, and Technology -- How are they related? • Computer - Assisted Reading Instruction • Computer - Assisted Writing • Using Multi-Media and Hypermedia in the Language Arts Classroom • Using Technology as a Means of Collaboration and Communication

  3. What do we know about learning? • Language Arts philosophy is changing. • Learning is spiral of inquiry. • Learning to learn is most important.

  4. What else do we know? • Learning is active, social, reflective, and occurs in context. • Technology’s not just for math and science.

  5. How do we change? • Technology is the answer • reading instruction • writing instruction • hypermedia and multi-media • collaboration and communication

  6. What are the standards? • Basic Operations and Concepts • Social Ethical and Human Issues • Technology Productivity Tools • Technology Communication Tools • Technology Research Tools • Technology Problem-Solving and Decision Making Tools

  7. Computer Assisted Reading Instruction - How will we use the computer? Phases • Computer Literacy • Programming • Tool • Using to Support Curriculum

  8. What should computer instruction in reading look like? • Focus on meaning and stress comprehension • Foster active involvement and stimulate thinking (monitor own learning)

  9. What should computer instruction in reading look like? • Support and extend knowledge of text structures • Various Content Areas • Should link reading and writing

  10. What about writing? • Fluent - Write as much as possible • Correct - Revise as much as possible • Writing is process • Word Processors can help; but skills must be taught (context, active, etc.)

  11. What are hypermedia and multimedia? • Hypermedia - links text and multimedia • Multimedia - mixing text, audio, and video with a computer • Brain Research and Constructivism

  12. Example Hypermedia / Multimedia Products • Original poems and images and videos • web-sites • Africa and America writing together • We learn by completing projects which require us to use the basics.

  13. How good is it? • Effect on motivation and morale - proven • Effect on learning - still needs more research.]

  15. Teacher education? • Standards by ISTE • Colleges of Education • PD (Needs to be supportive and ongoing)

  16. Constructive and Technology go hand in hand! • Learning is active • Learning is social. • Learning occurs in context • Learning is reflective. • Technology helps our learners.
