  1. NRPANorwegian Radiation Protection AuthorityAim: A good level of radiation protection for society, individuals and the environment.

About the organisation • Started in 1993 • Came from consolidation of the former Nuclear Energy Safety Authority and the National institute of Radiation Hygiene. • Organised under the Ministry of Health and Care Services • Provides assistance to all ministries on matters related to radiation, radiation protection and nuclear safety. • NPRA is built up from the international standard; IAEA, ICRP, CEC, IEC with more.

  3. Area of responsibility • Overseeing the use of radioactive substances and fissile material • Coordinating contingency plans against nuclear accidents and radioactive fallout • Monitoring natural and artificial radiation in the environment and at the workplace • Increasing knowledge of the occurrence, risk and effects of radiation

  4. Who works in NRPA? • Radiographers • Radiotheraphists • Physicians • Radiation protection experts • Lawers Ect..

  5. Laws in Norway that infect the mediacal use of radiation. • Act on Radiation Protection and Use of Radiation (No. 36 of 12 May 2000) • Radiation Protection Regulation: Regulations No. 1362 of 21 November 2003 on Radiation Protection and Use of Radiation

  6. The laws include for example • What the limit of radiation is to a radiographer/student or pregnant staff in a period of time. (§21. Dose Limit) • How to optimise the quality of the work done by the radiographer (§ 30. X-ray diagnosis) • Information about ALARA prinsiple, both to envirement and personell. (§ 29. Justafication) • That the patient is entitled to get information about radiation doses and the risk when attending radiation therapy. (§ 38. Radiation theraphy)

  7. What is the NRPA’s tasks? • NRPA is taking care that the law is followed This is done by making a guideline or setting standards that the users of the law can work towards. • These rules or lines are not legal, but a hint about how the NRPA mean that the law can bee followed. It is possible for one institute to do it their own way as long as they can prove that it’s the same or better that the guidelines from the NRPA.

  8. National council on radiation protection and measurements - NCRP • The Radiation Protection law from USA is named Public law 88-376 and was stated in 1964. • The main objectives in the law are as followed : • Collect and analyze the information and recommendations in the public interest about radiation protection, radiation measurements, quantities and units. • Develop basic knowledge of radiation protection • Facilitate effective use of combined resources of organizations concerned with radiation protection • Cooperate with national and international governmental and private organizations
