Gothic Elements In Dracula By: Kaci Clark English IV Honors Kim Locklear
Setting in a castle • This action takes place in and around an old castle, sometimes seemingly abandoned, sometimes occupied. The castle contains secret passages, trap doors, secret rooms, dark or hidden staircases, and locked sections. The castle is placed deep into the woods, all alone and seemingly secluded from the rest of society. Movement and darkness or shadows create the same sense of claustrophobia and entrapment.
An ancient prophecy is connected with the castle and its inhabitants. The prophecy says that on the night that Jonathan was to travel to Dracula's castle, was also the same night of St. George. This said that this was the night many spirits came out and haunted the land. While on his way, Jonathan was surrounded by the gothic elements of wolves, strange noises, and the creepy castle.
Mystery & suspense, Omens, Visions, and Inexplicable Events • Draculais pervaded by a threatening feeling, a fear enhanced by the unknown. The plot itself is built around a mystery, such as the unknown. When Jonathan watches Dracula climb down the castle wall, he realizes that he is not human. Also, when he notices that Dracula has power over wolves, it proves the gothic theme.
Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male • Dracula is the male character who has the power, as the overall ruler, to demand that one or more of the female characters do something intolerable. The woman are commanded to do something out of their will or even commit a crime. This proves true throughout the book when Lucy suddenly becomes ill, and begins to act extremely strange. Later on, she begins biting children and sucking their blood, which is something that she would never do in her right mind. The women also suffer all the more because they are abandoned by accident, and have no protector at time. This proves true when Mina was left all alone, and Dracula comes and seduces her.
