  1. SC.912.L.18.9Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Also assesses: SC.912.L.18.7, L.18.8, L.18.10. SC.912.L.18.7: Identify reactants, products and basic functions of photosynthesis. SC.912.L.18.8: Identify the reactants, products, and basic functions of photosynthesis. SC.912.L.18.10: Connect the role of Adenosine triphosphate to energy transfers within the cell.

  2. Benchmark Clarifications Students will explain how the products of photosynthesis are used as reactants for cellular respiration and vice versa. Students will explain how photosynthesis stores energy and cellular respiration releases energy. Students will identify the reactants, products and/or the basic function of photosynthesis. Students will identify the reactants, products and/or the basic functions of aerobic & anaerobic cellular respiration. Students will connect the role of ATP to energy transfers within the cell.

  3. Content Limits Items will not require memorization of the stages, specific events or intermediate molecules produced during these processes. Items do not require the balancing of equations. Items will not assess plant structures. Scenarios may include chemical equations. Scenarios referring to adenosine triphosphate should use the abbreviation ATP rather than the words adenosine triphosphate.

  4. Study the equation below. What product is missing from the equation for photosynthesis? Name the reactants and the products in the equation. sunlight 6CO2 + 6H2O → ____ + 6O2

  5. Autotrophs, such as plants, use light to make their own food. What happens to light absorbed by a plant during photosynthesis? A. It is converted to kinetic energyB. It powers a reaction that produces carbon dioxide and waterC. It is converted to chemical energy, which the plant stores.D. It powers a reaction that produces oxygen and carbon dioxide.

  6. Of the following factors, which will not have an effect on the photosynthetic process? • Light intensity • Water availability • Nitrogen concentration • Temperature fluctuation

  7. Gasses are a part of the photosynthesis process, different phases. Which gas is removed from the atmosphere during photosynthesis? • Hydrogen • Oxygen • Nitrogen • Carbon dioxide

  8. This picture shows a student’s experiment with a plant. Which change would most likely increase the volume of oxygen gas that accumulates in the top of the tube? • A. Use fewer plants • B. Reduce the amount of water • C. Use a larger container • D. Move the light source closer to the beaker

  9. A. Use few plantsB. Reduce the amount of waterC. Use a larger containerD. Move the light closer to the beaker

  10. What are the reactants for photosynthesis and how do they enter the plant?

  11. There are reactants and products in the photosynthesis process. What is the one component in photosynthesis that is NOT recycled and must be available to the plant?

  12. Chloroplasts are found in most plant cells but not in animal cells. Mitochondria are found in animal cells and most plant cells. Why are mitochondria found in most plant cells?

  13. What is the primary purpose of cellular respiration? • To store chemical energy in glucose molecules • To store chemical energy in carbon dioxide and water molecules • To use chemical energy from glucose molecules • To use chemical energy from carbon dioxide and water molecules

  14. Cellular respiration is a chemical process and can be represented by a chemical equation. What are the products in this chemical process? • Hydrocarbons and oxygen • Hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide • Water, carbon dioxide, and energy • Water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen

  15. Which equation shows the reactants and products of cellular respiration? • Carbon dioxide + water → sugar + oxygen • Carbon dioxide + oxygen → sugar + water • Sugar + carbon dioxide →water + oxygen • Sugar + oxygen →water + carbon dioxide

  16. All cells need energy. Where does the energy come from in plants? Briefly trace the energy from the original source to the “endpoint”. In animals?

  17. Which of these is required for aerobic cellular respiration? • A. oxygen • B. nitrogen • C. carbon dioxide • D. sunlight

  18. In terms of energy, how are cellular respiration and photosynthesis related? Energy captured in photosynthesis is used to power cellular respiration The energy transformed in cellular respiration is used to power photosynthesis Photosynthesis and respiration perform the same task in terms of energy transformation Energy is not involved in either photosynthesis or cellular respiration

  19. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are interrelated processes. During which biogeochemical cycle do the biological processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration play key roles?A. carbon cycleB. hydrogen cycleC. nitrogen cycleD. oxygen cycle
