  5. D Countries were unable to work out their problems by talking. Diplomatic Failures

  7. N The people of Europe wanted to prove that their country was the best. Nationalism

  8. C European countries competed for colonies and became enemies. Competition for Colonies

  9. E Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated. This is the spark that starts the war! Eeek!!

  11. Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by Serbian nationalists

  12. Austria declares war on Serbia

  13. Germany promised to support Austria (had a treaty)

  14. Russia has treaty with Serbia and begins mobilizing troops.

  15. Germany declares war on Russia

  16. France has a treaty with Russia and promises them support

  17. So Germany declared war on France

  18. Germany launches an attack on France by invading through Belgium

  19. Britain had a 75 year old treaty promising to protect the neutrality of Belgium so they declare war on Germany

  20. Britain’s colonies and other Commonwealth members came into the war to support Britain (Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, India)

  21. The United States declared neutrality

  22. Japan had a treaty with Britain and declared war on Germany

  23. Italy declared neutrality and stayed out of it (for a while) in spite of a treaty with Germany and Austria

  24. The world is at war!
