E.U.R.O.P.E. E.A.C. ● European Universities’ Research On the Promotion of Enterprise education Extended Awareness Campaign Europe’s Lisbon Statement vision calls for the development of a knowledge-driven, creative entrepreneurial economy and for competitive individuals leading their respective organisations in international markets. It seems that we have some way to go until this vision is fully shared across member state pupils. Enterprise education within schools can play a significant role in moving towards these goals, by exposing students to the excitement and dynamism of innovation and entrepreneurial life-skills SOCRATES PROGRAMME – General activities of observation, analysis and innovation Action 6.1.2 and 6.2

E.U.R.O.P.E. E.A.C. ● European Universities’ Research On the Promotion of Enterprise education Extended Awareness Campaign The background to E.U.R.O.P.E. E.A.C. • A wide-ranging study was carried out within schools in each of the participating countries • Primary research comprised a survey amongst: • pupils, • teachers, • administrators and • entrepreneurs • Extensive semi-structured interviews with: • Pupils (later stages of secondary education) • Teachers • Full results were presented in May 2006 http://www.unipi.gr/socrates/europe EUROPE Coordinating institution: University of Piraeus SOCRATES PROGRAMME – General activities of observation, analysis and innovation Action 6.1.2 and 6.2
E.U.R.O.P.E. E.A.C. ● European Universities’ Research On the Promotion of Enterprise education Extended Awareness Campaign Some Outcomes of the EUROPE project • Fully 60% of pupils surveyed intended to start their own business one day, compared to just 30% of parents in the study. • Business planning and personal development skills courses seem to have the most effect on pupils’ feeling sure of themselves as potential entrepreneurs, whereas mini-enterprise courses and enterprise skills courses enhance pupils’ perceived certainty of their venture’s success. • Consistent gender differences were evident, but the gap between boys and girls was not large for most of the areas studied. • Girls are almost as likely as boys to say that they intend to start a business some day. • many fewer girls reported that they would feel very certain of success in tackling • entrepreneurship, and that they would love to do so. • Teachers involved in enterprise education seem to lack sufficiently specialized background preparation for their tasks. • A difference was identified between how cultures view innovative, creative new starts, in comparison to entrepreneurship as a more generic concept. • pupils in some of the countries surveyed show medium to high levels of appreciation for entrepreneurship in general and of admiration for innovation-driven new firms, but relatively low levels of admiration for entrepreneurs. • In other countries however the situation is reversed or more balanced.
