Romantic Relationships Ashley Taylor Lori James ChouaVang
From the text book – (section 31.2) ** quality of adolescents’ relationships mirror the quality of other relationships they are familiar with. Study from professional journal – ** Covered the prevalence of abuse and self- esteem issues in high school relationships Results -- *more males reported experiencing some form of moderate to mild physical abuse—more females reported staying in an abusive relationship (13%)
Interview – Looking back in the Box ** interviewed boyfriend about first wife – found their older adolescent relationship mirrored what was in the studies… • Quote from interviewee– “when you’re in the box and you’re a kid, you have no idea what is going on. It’s when you look back that you learn”
Problems with the Research First Study --- adolescent relationship violence has only recently been recognized as a significant public health issue… studies are lacking due to reliance on adult framework to examine the problem of teen dating violence… *** differences between adult and adolescent relationships -- Male power in relationships (adult vs teen) -- Inexperience in communication and poor coping strategies • -- Peer influences, attitudes and behaviors. • Second Study – ** compared data on experience of relationship aggression using the two methods. -- one time, 2 month retro assessment -- cumulative method, based on 4, two week retrospective assessments ** Cumulative method: greater amount reported physical aggression and threatening behavior
Problems with research --- Memory * One-time, retrospective method ---- concerns with memory--- affects accuracy of data *** negative memories– more likely to decay than happier memories. Substantial forgetting has been documented for presumably highly memorable events like victimization. (Gottfredson &Hindelang, 1977, Skogan, 1986; Wolfer, 1999). These forgotten memories can affect behavior (Brewin, Dalgleish, and Joseph 1996) Results of testing – cumulative method vs one time method ** higher results on cumulative assessment – more accurate??? Leaned toward recency of events. Retrieval strategies for different reference periods??? • Cumulative Assessment --- Opportunity for advancement in area of adolescent aggression
Theories & theorists this relates to.. • Piaget and the Formal Operations Stage--- happens at 12 yrs and onward… Adolescents can think systematically and reason about what might be as well as what is. THIS STAGE IS NOT UNIVERSAL – NOT ALL ADOLESCENTS GET THERE • Social Learning Theory (Bandura) – Emphasized the role of cognition in social learning, pointing out the children learn from the behavior of those around them. • Erikson’s theory of PyschoSocial Development (specifically stage 5) – being caught between past identity as a child and their upcoming future. Dealing with puberty and sexual urges accompanied by social pressures. Need to determine who they are or live in confusion
Relationship Diversity Discrimination Among Lesbian/Gay/Bi-Sexual/Transgender (LGBT) • Bullying • Harassment • Verbal abuse • Physical abuse • Suicidal attempts (Risk Factor for LGBT students) • Low self-esteem • Victimization • Substance Abuse • Depression • Fear • Isolation/Lonliness • Anxiety
Awareness • Discuss gay awareness with children, teachers, peers • Homosexual is about seeking acceptance, not SEX • Educate young children on gay issues to avoid discrimination and harassment • It’s Elementary-Talking about gay issues in school (VIDEO)
Prevention Schools to provide direct support services and social opportunites GSA- Gay-Straight Alliance Address gay issues in early education classrooms Eliminate belief that gayness is about sex Allow acceptance of all students regardless of his/her or their parents sexual orientation Increase teachers knowledge of gay issues Inspire teachers to embrace all students in spite of sexual preference Create a “Zero-Tolerance Policy” for harassment and discrimination of (GLBT)
Questions to think about??? • In our present society what affects relationships positively??? Negatively??? • What is your earliest dating memory?? • Do you believe that your parents’ relationship or your family structure affected your early dating experiences??? • Do you think your parents dating experiences were different from yours??? How or what do you think caused the differences ???
