  2. 1980-1985 • 1980-IBM hires Paul Allen and Bill Gates to create a new operating system for a new PC and develop some new versions of some computer languages • 1981-Microsoft release MS-DOS 1.0 in August, Xerox introduces a graphic workstation, and a man named Adam Osborne developed first successful portable computer • 1982-Wordperfect 1.0, the most popular word processing program was released, Compaq is found with Texas Instruments and the Commodore 64 begins being sold at $200 which makes it the best selling computer of all time • 1983-More than 10 million computers are sold in the US this year • 1984-The 3.5-inch floppy diskette is introduced which later becomes an industry standard, the Computer Museum opens in downtown Boston and USC creates alarm about computer viruses • 1985-The GNU manifesto is published and Microsoft Windows 1.0 is shipped which has a graphical interface and allows the computer to be much easier to use

  3. 1986-1990 • 1986-Apple introduces the MAC plus which contained 1 megabyte of RAM and now more than 30 million computers are in use in the US • 1987-Microsoft introduces Windows 2.0, Powerpoint and Microsoft Works • 1988-Now 45 million computers are in use in the US, Creative Labs introduces the SoundBlaster sound card • 1989-Intel releases the new processor with more than 1 million transistors and multitasking capabilities and Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML, the first language that is used for homepages • 1990-Microsoft and IBM stop working together to develop operating systems and become each others biggest rivals

  4. 1991-1995 • 1991-Linux is introduced by Linus Torvald and The World Wide Web is launched • 1992-Microsoft introduces Windows 3.1 which sells more than 1 million copies within the first 2 months of release • 1993-President Bill Clinton puts the US White House online with a WWW page e-mail address for the President, Vice President first lady and Intel releases releases the Pentium Processor with a 60 MHz processor. The games DOOM and Must are released which are both turning points for the game genre • 1995-Live Script is renamed to JavaScript, a language many homepages use, Microsoft releases Windows 95 which sells more than 1 million copies in 4 days and the USB standard is released

  5. 1996-1999 • 1996-Intel releases the 200 MHz P6 • 1997-Digital Video Disc goes on sale, The NASA Pathfinder Web Site which is running real-time images sent from the Pathfinder on Mars receives more than 100 million hits during its first four days. The site sets a new popularity record. The Intel Pentium II 233 MHz is released. Advanced Graphics Ports are designed for video cards. It is now used in every computer today. • 1998-Microsoft Windows 98 is officially released and Apple computers introduces the iMac, a competitor to PC’s • 1999-The Intel Pentium III 500 MHz is released

  6. 2000-2003 • 2000-Many experts, governments and businesses feared that January 1, 2000 could cause serious issues with the date stamp on computers believing that cause many old computers relied off the last 2 digits of the year that the 00 would cause the computer to think that it was 1900. It was called the 2000 bug. In reality good preparation only caused a few glitches. In this year Microsoft Windows 2000 was released • 2001-Microsoft Windows Xp Home and professional additions are released • 2002-Approximately 1 billion computers have been released since the 1970’s • 2003-Wireless computers and internets have highest sales ever, cellular phones and handhelds are able to access the web. See a turning affect on many people using laptops instead of PC’s.
