  12. St. Lawrence River The St. Lawrence River is the largest river in North America. The river is important because it connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. This route has provided a way to Canada’s inland for many years, bringing trade, settlers, and missionaries into Canada’s core. Today, it is the route for many large shipping industries.

  17. The Great Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior make up the 5 Great Lakes. These lakes are so deep that they could cover the continental US with 9 ½ feet of water. They provide a large resource of fresh water and are big enough to affect the weather by cooling down summers & bringing rain. The lakes support a large fishing industry, & the land surrounding the lakes is thick with forests and filled with natural minerals & metals.

  22. Hudson Bay Right off of the Canadian Shield is the Hudson Bay, named for Henry Hudson, the first explorer to reach the bay. Hudson Bay is home to the Hudson Bay Company, the oldest corporation in North America, which operates in Canada today. The bay was used by the French & English & has been a major hub for trade since the 1800s.

  25. Canadian Shield This large area in central & eastern Canada is made up of exposed rock & is home to some of the oldest rock in the world. Scientists believe that the Shield was once covered with mountains & volcanoes that eroded over the centuries & left behind only remnants of their rock foundation.
