  1. EDITING 101 “The Perfecting of your Paper”

  2. How do I edit? “Editing” means carefully checking the technical correctness of your paper.

  3. You carefully examine your writing for: • Grammar • Spelling • Punctuation • Capitalization

  4. Grammar Remember nouns, adjectives, and verbs? What was a very important thing we learned about verbs? Every complete sentence has to have one!

  5. Sentence: a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, and that expresses a complete thought. Example: The window in the kitchen could not be opened.

  6. Fragment: looks like a sentence BUT is actually only part of a sentence. Example: The telephone with redial capacity

  7. Test to identify sentence fragments: Is there a verb? Is there a subject? Does it express a complete thought?

  8. A run-on sentence occurs when two complete sentences run into each other without any punctuation. Example: the icebergs broke off from the glacier they drifted into the sea.

  9. A comma splice occurs when a comma (instead of a period) is used incorrectly between two complete sentences. Example: the icebergs broke off from the glacier, they drifted into the sea.

  10. Spelling

  11. Punctuation • A statement is followed by a period.

  12. A question is followed by a question mark.

  13. An exclamation is followed by an exclamation point.

  14. Use commas to separate items in a series. • Use a comma before the words “and, but, for, or, so, yet” when one of these words joins an independent clause. Whew!

  15. Capitalization • Always capitalize the first word of a sentence. • Always capitalize the pronoun “I”. Example: Yesterday I wrote my first draft of this paper.

  16. Always capitalize proper nouns and proper adjectives. Examples: Chief Seattle Last of the Mohicans Mrs. Johnson

  17. Always capitalize geographical names. Examples: Bushy Run Battlefield Fort William Henry Lake George

  18. Now start editing!
