  1. God’s Commands as to Our Speech Conversation and Communication

  2. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29)

  3. Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” Profanity, crude speech, sexual innuendo, lies, etc.; all of these would constitute “corrupt” or rotten words. We should seek to build up, not tear down.

  4. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3)

  5. 1 Peter 2:1-3 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” “Evil Speaking” – (katalalia, katalalia) Defamation, backbiting.Literally, to speak against

  6. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) • Speak the Lord’s Will (Numbers 22:35)

  7. Numbers 22:35 “Then the Angel of the LORD said to Balaam, ‘Go with the men, but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.’ So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.” Balaam was compelled to speak only the words given him by God. He had no right to speak by his own authority! (Balak, King of Moab wanted him to curse Israel, his enemy)

  8. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) • Speak the Lord’s Will (Numbers 22:35) • Praise God (Psalm 105:1-3)

  9. Psalm 105:1-3 “Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! 2 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! 3 Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!” God is great and wonderful, and worthy of our praise!

  10. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) • Speak the Lord’s Will (Numbers 22:35) • Praise God (Psalm 105:1-3) • Proclaim His Blessings (Mark 5:18-19)

  11. Mark 5:18-19 “And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.’” When we tell of our great blessings, God receives the glory!

  12. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) • Speak the Lord’s Will (Numbers 22:35) • Praise God (Psalm 105:1-3) • Proclaim His Blessings (Mark 5:18-19) • Speak Faithfully and Accurately (Jeremiah 23:28)

  13. Jeremiah 23:28 “‘The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?’ says the LORD.” Teaching falsely or falsely claiming authority will bring God’s condemnation. We are the chaff, God is the wheat! “‘Behold, I am against the prophets,’ says the LORD, ‘who use their tongues and say, “He says.”’” (vs. 31)

  14. God’s Commands as to Our Speech • No Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29) • Lay Aside Evil Speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) • Speak the Lord’s Will (Numbers 22:35) • Praise God (Psalm 105:1-3) • Proclaim His Blessings (Mark 5:18-19) • Speak Faithfully and Accurately (Jeremiah 23:28) • Speak the Truth to your Neighbor (Ephesians 4:25)

  15. Ephesians 4:25 “Therefore, putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,’ for we are members of one another.” Truth and honesty are characteristic of the “new man.” “Put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (vs. 24)

  16. Conclusion God requires us to control our speech, and show ourselves to be holy before Him. How are you doing with your speech?
