  7. The vision… SUPPORTING INFORMING • Peat programme • NSOC scores • RLS Supporting organisations and staff to do the right thing Are we doing enough of this? How could we improve? INFLUENCING • Work with stakeholders on the cleanliness agenda • Developing guidance • Issuing alerts 7

  8. Some ideas… • Improve feedback and action planning capacity of PEAT • Targeted support for those organisations in difficulty • Contribute to the research agenda

  10. Patient and Public Expectations • NHS Care has improved significantly in some important respects and most patients are highly appreciative of the care they receive, but despite pockets of excellent practice the service as whole is far from patient-centred. Picker institute 2007

  11. Patient and Public Expectations In a 2007 poll undertaken by the NPSA, 99% of those asked stated they believe a clean hospital to be vital in protecting them against infection.

  13. Failures in confidence Patients will use what they can see as a proxy measure for what they can’t… Patients who see a dirty front entrance may assume the operating theatres are dirty Patients who meet a rude car park attendant may assume the nurses are uncaring 14

  19. Results Report from a sample of 51 Trusts 24 had no breaches relating to clean and suitable environment 27 did not comply with 4c (for 1 it was a material breach) 31 did not comply with 4d 18 breached both 11 breached 4e 11 breached 4f (3 material)
