Minoans • Developed on Crete (discovered by Sir Arthur Evans around 1900) • Cities of palaces, chalets, townhouses largest was palace of Minos at Knossos it was built above a maze (labyrinth = home of the Minotaur) • Thrived on commerce, trade, industry, agriculture, and fishing • Art was non-religious frescoes = pictures painted on wet plaster • No city walls and few weapons, yet bulls and double ax (labrys) are key symbols • Very athletic (bull jumping, boxing) • Used a syllabic form of writing called Linear A (not yet deciphered) • c. 1450 BC – natural disaster and then civilization quickly disappears

Mycenaeans • Developed on Greek mainland (unearthed by Heinrich Schliemann) • Conquered the Minoans & adopted a lot of their cultureAdapted Minoan writing to their own language (called Linear B) • Repressed women and forced them to live a life of leisure • Militaristic – rulers were warriors, fortified towns • King Agamemnon led troops in the Trojan War (around 1200 – 1100 BC) • Learn about it through the works of Homer • Conquered by foreigners shortly after 1200 BC
PROCESSING • Create a flier (either for a real estate office or a travel agents office) seeking to bring people to either the city of Knossos or Mycenae (in ancient times that is). Include at least one picture and be sure to include at least two things that would be interesting to do.
