  30. Director Remuneration Resolution Whereas the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission is established as a development commission pursuant to section 5 of the Agri-Food Act: Whereas the Commission consists of a Board of Directors consisting of six registered producers elected in accordance with sections 18 to 20 of the Act. Whereas the remuneration to be paid to the members of the Commission is to be fixed by the registered producers at the annual meeting, and Whereas remuneration for previous fiscal years was $235.00 (Chair) and $155.00 (Directors). Be it resolved that the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission rates of remuneration for its Directors is established at current rates of $235.00 (Chair) and $155.00 (Directors) for the fiscal year2008/2009.

  31. Sulfentrazone Resolution WHEREAS  Saskatchewan produces 80% of Canada’s flax crop; and Canada is the world's largest producer and exporter of flax, and Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission represents more than 12,000 flax producers. AND WHEREAS  The weed kochia creates numerous harvest problems for Saskatchewan flax producers. Its later emergence means green competition at harvest time, particularly when straight cutting. Kochia causes problems of contamination in that it is extremely difficult to separate kochia seeds from flax and weed matter in flax straw for value-added processing.

  32. Sulfentrazone Resolution Continued AND WHEREAS  Sulfentrazone is a soil-applied Group 14 herbicide that requires rainfall for activation. Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission has supported several research projects on weed control in flax crops and this research, along with numerous other research results, have shown sulfentrazone to be highly effective in controlling kochia.

  33. Sulfentrazone Resolution Continued AND WHEREAS  Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has only approved the use of sulfentrazone on chickpeas in Saskatchewan due to concerns for the potential for groundwater contamination and rotated crop injury. Label expansion based on available research could address and alleviate these concerns. Current science indicates that there is low potential for unacceptable levels of sulfentrazone reaching groundwater when used according to label directions. Sulfentrazone has been registered in the US and other countries for more than 10 years without a single report of groundwater contamination or rotated crop injury when used as specified on the label.

  34. Sulfentrazone Resolution Continued Label mitigation could ensure that sulfentrazone use is restricted in potentially vulnerable areas, such as areas with coarse soil, low organic matter, and extreme pH ranges. AND WHEREAS  For flax to continue to gain acreage and global marketplace share in all arenas, from food and feed to fiber and industrial uses, it must maintain quality. Saskatchewan producers need more tools to profitably produce quality Canadian flax. One of those tools is the utilization of sulfentrazone products to retain crop cleanliness and yields.

  35. Sulfentrazone Resolution Continued THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT  The Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission strongly supports expedient action by the Government of Canada to register the use of sulfentrazone products for flax production in Western Canada.
