Definitions Circular Saw – Used for ripping and cross cutting; adjustable fence and tilting blade allows quick accurate cutting. Riving knife splits timber and prevents binding; various blades available. Band Saw – A toothed band of steel is tensioned and driven round two pulley wheels. Blade runs between guides; use mainly for cross cut work, cutting ply and sheet material. Pillar/Vertical Drill – Fixed machine for accurate drilling of holes. Drill held in a Jacob’s Chuck. Various Speeds available; adjustable table for height and angle.
Definitions Horizontal Drilling Machine – Fixed machine for accurate drilling of holes; drill held in a Jacob’s Chuck. Drill and work piece held horizontally. Often used to produce dowel joints. Sanding Machine – abrasive disc rotates ant high speed; work piece held on table and fed towards down turning wheel. Adjustable fence allows accurate sanding of end grain and mitre joints etc.
Definitions Wood Turning Lathe – Used for wood turning between centres and faceplate turning. Wood held and rotated by lathe whilst operator cuts using chisels and gouges resting on a tool rest. Variable speed. Mortising Machine – Often called hollow chisel mortiser; drill rotates inside a hollow, four sided chisel to drill and cut square holes. Work piece clamped to table and fed underneath chisel. Router – A hand held power tool used to cut housings, mouldings etc. can be table mounted (as shown). Variable depth and a large cutter selection allows a great range of profiles to be cut.
Definitions Planer/Thicknesser – Blades are held in a rotating, balanced block and wood is passed over the top to produce a high planed finish. Adjustable thickness enables accurate dressing of wood. Horizontal or Flatbed Grinding Machine – A power driven, horizontal, artificial grindstone; used to grind chisels and plane irons prior to honing. Adjustable clamp ensures accuracy. Oil feed keeps work piece cool.
