  2. Another Cycle of STRESS • Transition to college=>Stress • Stress=>Potential learning/academic problems • Learning/Academic problems=>More Stress

  3. TRADITIONAL STUDENTS • What are some of the stressors traditional college students face?

  4. TRADITIONAL STUDENTS • Lifestyle change (new responsibilities-cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc.) • Grades (self worth, preoccupied so health and social relationships…, remember, who you know…) • Course Overload (too many courses in…,don’t take time to enjoy…, may actually end up learning…)

  5. TRADITIONAL STUDENTS cont. • Friendships (giving up…, developing…, must test self-disclosure) • Friend/Acquaintance scale on pg. 304-305 • Love (misunderstandings regarding relationships/types of love; YOU are in CONTROL-choose rel. that is…) • Sex/AIDS/STDs (pressure from outside and/or within; what is normal?; here’s my take…)

  6. TRADITIONAL STUDENTS cont. • 5 of every 1000; 1of 4 men AND women • Breakups – person experiencing most stress is one who is/was: • More invested… • The dumpee • Afraid of being alone • Remember, you can’t control being dumped, but…

  7. Communication regarding Sex and Rape • Start with Assertiveness (DES message) • Saying “NO” • TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!! (self-awareness)

  8. Sex and Rape cont. • LISTEN (could easily employ active/reflective listening) • ASK (question styles)

  9. ANTIOCH COLLEGE • Description of the policy • What do you think?

  10. SHYNESS • We all know… • …but, shyness can make it difficult to think clearly and/or communicate effectively • Shyness as a stressor=>Negative consequences(eg. Depression, Anxiety,etc.)

  11. JEALOUSY • What emotion/feeling is associated with JEALOUSY? • 2 Basic components: Battered Pride and Violation of “property” rights • What are 2 ways of responding to JEALOUSY?

  12. JEALOUSY cont. • Protect ego OR • Strive to improve the relationship with… • KEY!! =>If JEALOUSY IS a stressor, it is a stressor to both the person WHO IS JEALOUS and THE OTHER PERSON

  13. THE OLDER/NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT • 37% of UNDERGRADUATE college students are OVER 25 YRS. OLD • What are some similarities? • What are some differences?

  14. OLDER/NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT cont. • Career and School • Family and School – Spouse and Financial • Self – Doubt: What might be some quest. a Nontrad. might ask him/herself?

  15. MINORITY COLLEGE STUDENT • RACISM can increase stress to the point of illness AND can lead to lower grades. How? • Language barriers – How can this be a stressor?

  16. MINORITY cont. • Style of instruction – What about this? • Family pressures – What are possibilities here? (cultural value; first one…) • Developmental Transition – How could this apply? (move from majority…)

COLLEGE STUDENT INTERVENTIONS (pg. 316-318) • Directed toward shyness, but… • Only change what must be changed… • Experience new things, but remain… • Control and Responsibility (peer pressure, past) • Self-Awareness (strengths & weaknesses) • What works for YOU • Taking chances (ego strength, you never know if…) • Jealousy (FYI, 3 step process on pg. 318)
