  1. Clinton Rehost Challenges

  2. Clinton Simulator Rehost Scope Rehost executive system and instructor station to Opensim Convert existing ROSE models to Xtreme Upgrade to Windows 7 Upgrade to latest compilers Create full set of panel graphics and P&ID’s in JADE Deliver 3 vPanel units

  3. Clinton Simulator Rehost Justification 3 Simulator fleet standardization Exelon software support model Cost savings associated with fleet model upgrades

  4. Clinton Simulator Rehost Project Plan 4 Rehost existing Clinton software to Opensim Validated rehost load against current simulator data Develop new Xtreme models Validated integration using Excel DDE spreadsheets

  5. Overview of Issues 5 Compiler and Windows 7 Difficulties Modeling Reactor Feed Pump Turbines Off-Gas Chemistry Discrepancies Repeatability Issues Gland Steam Limitations Other Modeling Complications

  6. Compiler and Windows 7 Difficulties • Fortran Issues • Unsigned types to signed types: Integer*1 types used as array indexes can no longer exceed a value of 127. • Logical Type Compatibility Issues • Windows 7 administrative privileges • 64 Bit Compatibility

  7. Turbine Modeling • Issue: • The former simulation used four Reactor Feed Pump Turbines to model two physical turbines in the plant. • The previous model used separate turbines for high pressure steam flow and low pressure steam flow. • Plant data disagreed with simulation data

  8. Turbine Modeling Cont. • Resulting Complications: • Incorrect Main Steam Flow to Turbines • Inaccurate Main Steam flow to Re-Heater • Unclear transition between Low Pressure source and High Pressure source of steam for running the turbines • Difficulties in interfacing the feed pumps • Disrupted power balance

  9. Turbine Modeling Cont. • GSE’s Improvements: • Modeled Main Steam System with two Reactor Feed Pump Turbines • Matched the Thermal Kit data received from site instead of former models. • Re-adjusted Feedwater Pump discharge pressure • Re-tuned Feedwater Heater temperatures and pressures • Modified steam extraction temperatures and pressures • Revised the Feed Pump Control Scheme • Altered Feed Pump controller constants to better fit plant data • Successfully retuned Main Steam to re-establish the Overall Power Balance • Modified the Feed Pump speed and flow characteristics

  10. Off Gas Chemistry Discrepancies • Issue: • The levels of hydrogen and oxygen weren’t congruent with the heat output from the Recombiner • Resulting Complications: • Incorrect values of hydrogen and oxygen were found coming from legacy code. • An inaccurate value for the heat of formation was found in previous models which allowed the heat output from Recombiner to appear correct. • GSE’s Improvements: • The levels of hydrogen and oxygen entering main steam lines were adjusted to the correct concentrations to produce the expected Recombiner heat output.

  11. Repeatability Issues • Issue: • Previous simulation dispatcher caused repeatability problems when running a LOCA and Loss of Off-Site power transient. • Resulting Complications: • Fixing the dispatcher resulted in a failed transient due to asynchronous malfunctions. • Poor design of the HPCS control prevented an obvious solution. • GSE’s Improvements: • Resolved repeatability issue by adjusting asynchronous nature of the LOCA and Loss of Off-Site power malfunctions. • Provided a passing LOCA and Loss of Off-Site Power transient.

  12. Gland Steam Limitations • Issue: • Existing simulation only modeled one source of Gland Steam which differed from the plant’s four sources. • Resulting Complications: • One source of Gland Steam limits the modeling capabilities and minimizes simulation potential in relation to actual plant operations. • GSE improvements: • GSE modeled all four sources of Gland Steam, increasing operation capabilities and providing a more realistic model.

  13. Additional Issues Inaccurate and inconsistent valve stroke times False flow boundaries, flow paths, heat sources\sinks Inaccurate data entered in models Feed pump curve data inconsistent with simulation
