  4. View the Video • What actions do you see? Who is completing the actions? • "I Would Run to You"

  5. Listen the the Song • What actions do you notice? • How would the song change if were “It Was Heard by Me Through the Grapevine”? • "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye

  6. Read the Passage “Do Good” • Identify as many verbs in the passage as possible and prepare to share.

  7. Listen to the Podcast • Listen to the Grammar Girl Podcast and read the transcript as the podcast plays. • Underline key details regarding active and passive voice. • Active Versus Passive Voice: Grammar Girl

  8. Guided Notes • In a sentence using active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action expressed in the verb. • In a sentence using passive voice, the subject is acted upon; he or she receives the action expressed by the verb.

  9. Reasons to Use Active Voice • Active voice is used in most non-scientific writing. • Using active voice makes your meaning clear and keeps your sentences from becoming unnecessarily complicated or wordy. • Using passive voice sometimes buries or masks the meaning of your sentences.

Your Turn • Write as many sentences in Active Voice as possible in the time allotted. • Choose from this List: • Energize, discover, forge, force, amaze, built, unveil, love, rally, animate, sold, shop, read, create, vote, punch , advance, hobble, flush, lunge, flounder, lurch , crouch, dash, submerge, stumble, laugh, steal, reel, mail, restore, preside, yank, stamp, stumble.

  16. Share Examples • Share your examples with a partner; check to make sure your sentences are written in active voice.
