  4. Legal form (1) • In the EU-15/EFTA countries, the most common (but not the only) model is the NREN which is a separate legal entity, controlled by the research and education community • In other areas, there is greater diversity GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005

  5. Legal form (2) • Conclusion: NREN development requires the commitment of all major stakeholders, such as funders and users. A governing model that allows the participation of these stakeholders would seem to be the most appropriate; such a situation can be achieved in a number of different ways. Users/clients (2) • Gigabit Ethernet is being introduced by many hitherto less developed NRENs (such as AMREJ, MARNET and RENAM) and thus seems to make it possible, for the first time, to quickly address an importantaspect of (…) the ‘digital divide’ in Europe (…). Network (2) • There are indications that more and more NRENs are switching over to dark fibre as the technology of the future, with the EU NRENs being in the lead • The trend seems to be that in the more advanced countries, the core capacity will evolve to 10 Gb/s or multiples of that.   10. Traffic (1) • Growth rates in the new EU member states and in non-EU/EFTA countries are clearly higher than those in the ‘old’ EU member states • It seems that in the EU, traffic growth is slowing down GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005

Traffic (2) • It seems that traffic is now determined more by (changes in) user demand, rather than by network capacity limitations. • It is unclear if this trend towards slower growth will persist • The longer-established NRENs from the EU and EFTA countries are mostly net exporters of data, while the other NRENs are net importers. Services • Increased need for AAI • Grid services are currently running in 15 out of the 27 EU/EFTA NRENs in the survey and in 5 out of the 16 NRENs from other countries in the survey • More NRENs planning to introduce such a service • NREN support is needed for running the service in the great majority of cases GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005

Funding • Comparisons are difficult (almost impossible) • The trend is that budgets stay relatively stable and that NRENs are able to deliver more bandwidth and more services for roughly the same amount of money. • EU projects seem to act as a catalyst for increased national NREN budgets in some countries GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
