Activities • 15 Steering Committee meetings; items on the agenda included • Annual Stakeholder Meeting • Engagements with UNDP, FAO, Kilimo Trust, IDH, USAID • Sector-wide extension materials • 13 coffee shows • ToR Platform, Steering Committee & Secretariat • Importing seed of the Batian Arabica variety from Kenya • ToR for the Sector Review

  3. Activities (ctd) • Benchmarks agreed and set • Coffee quality mapping (IITA) • Certification of inputs dealers • National Export Strategy • Scenario Impact Assessment on ways to invest $80m in the Uganda coffee sector • Evaluation of the national steering committee

Achievements • Established improved communication linkages between the national steering committee and the 21 district steering committees • The draft National Coffee Policy was sent to MAAIF – UCDA the lead organisation • 19 nurseries received 4,253 CWD resistant plantlets for establishing mother gardens • 11 new CWD resistant lines went for field trials

Achievements (ctd) • 17 clones being tested for resistance to Coffee Leaf Rust • 470 agro-input dealers awaiting decisions (from MAAIF) on certification • 13 coffee shows organised successfully • 8,126 farmers attended the shows (an increase of 72% over last year) • 173 stallholders attended the shows (an increase of 65% over last year)

  6. Activities not done this year but carried forward to 2011-12 • Starting a newsletter • Launching the climate change taskforce • Registering the IWCA Uganda Chapter as an NGO • Training NAADS extension officers in coffee specific extension • Increased responsiveness of MAAIF on the certification of agro-input dealers • Invite a representative of financial institutions onto the steering committee • Establish a forum for farmer organisations involved in coffee

  7. Evaluation of the National Steering Committee Undertaken by MSc student from the Netherlands, Wageningen University, Marloes Hofstede Results • NSC is not representative enough • Tasks and goals not really monitored • Links between national and district need to be improved • Communication is quite poor – about the NSC and what it does
