  2. British Strengths • More professional soldiers than the Continental Army • 30,000 Hessians – German mercenaries • Larger Population – 7 million vs. 2.5 million • British troops were well trained & supplied • Strongest Navy in the World!

  3. Colonial Strengths • Patriotism – A just cause • Great marksmanship – Accurate at 200 yards! • Leadership - Commander George Washington • Home field advantage –they knew the land!

  4. British Weaknesses • Distance – 3000 miles between Britain and America. Sending supplies was slow and costly. News traveled slow. • Poor military and political leadership • Need clear victory • Large territory to control

  5. Colonial Weaknesses • Not enough men enlisted in the Continental Army • Poor training • Not enough money - shortages of guns, gunpowder, food, uniforms, and shoes • Disunity and poor organization. • No navy • One third of the Colonists were Loyalists (Tories).
