  2. What Is A Video File Format? “A container or wrapper format is a met-file format whose specification describes how data & meta-data are stored (not coded). A program able to identify & open a container file might not be able to descode the contained data.” -Wikipedia

MPEG 4 • Based on Apple’s older Quicktime container (.mov) • Aims to provide single codec from low bandwidth, high CPU devices & everything in between • H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec • Unsupported by Internet Explorer, Firefox 3.5, Konqueror, Opera 10.5 & Ephiphany • 3D rendering • User Interactive • Contains Metatags

OGG • - Free, open container format • Open standard – source friendly & unencumbered by any know patent • Supported by Firefox 3.5, Chrome 4 & opera 10.5 • Supported out of the box by all major Linux distributions • Unsupported by Internet explorer and Safari • Can be used on Mac & Pc if Quicktme is uploaded • Manipulation of high quality multimedia • High quality streaming • Ogg video – Theora • Ogg audio – Vorbis

  5. VP8 • Another video codec from On2 technologies by Google, same company that developed VP3 (later theora) • Open video compression • Open source friendly • Modern codec • Encumbered by any know patent • Apple devices & browser (ipads, iphone & Safari) do not support VP8
