Moving to a New Phase • Successfully taken the program from a $100M windfall to a working network of over 130 engaged partners • Survey landscape, plan, explain plan, defend plan, pilot, consensus, invest, adjust, expand, repeat • Measured, incremental progress • Now • The NDIIPP project agreements are ending • The Library needs to report to Congress • There needs to be a next step

  4. Where the Lawyers Come In • Help you create some kind of formal sustainable organization • Reviewed models; cribbed from them all • Just do it • Contractual • Corporate • Statutory • Charter

National Digital Stewardship Alliance • National – whole country’s involved; not international • Digital – born digital or born-again digital; electronic • Stewardship – caring for heritage assets that belong to other institutions and to other generations • Alliance – advancing common interests and cause (sounds like there’s movement) June 2009

  7. Members • Organizations that commit to making a sustained contribution to national digital stewardship in one or more stewardship roles • Current NDIIPP partners • New Members added by invitation • Vote

Associates • Stakeholders that cannot commit to making sustained contributions, but share an interest in digital preservation, support the Alliance's mission, and are willing to provide advice or expertise • Smaller institutions, foreign institutions, individuals, … • Added by invitation • No vote

  9. Eligibility • Organizations from all sectors • Government agencies - Federal, state, local, municipal • Educational institutions • Libraries, archives • Non-profit organizations, associations, standards bodies • Business entities • Individuals • By invitation

  11. Stewardship Roles • Members commit to making sustained contribution in one or more roles • Content • Standards & Practices • Infrastructure • Innovation • Outreach & Education • Add, change as new roles develop … • There’s a standing committee for each role

  12. Content • Contributing significant materials to the national collection to be preserved and made available to current and future generations • Annual additions to the national collection • Content creators looking for a steward • Libraries, archives & traditional stewardship organizations

  13. Standards & Practices • Developing, following and promoting effective methods for selecting, organizing, preserving, and serving digital content • Perhaps developing certification paths • Education and training

Infrastructure • Developing and maintaining tools for curation and preservation • Providing storage, hosting, migration, or similar services for the long-term preservation of digital content • Building a collection of open source tools • Services suited to different requirements • Different types, scopes and scales

  15. Innovation • Encouraging and conducting research in digital preservation science and technologies • Periodically describing a research agenda • Taking up research challenges identified by the Alliance • Disseminating research findings

  16. Outreach & Education • Building relationships with stakeholder communities and preparing and sharing training resources and guides.

  17. New & Changing Roles • The structure can change as familiar roles change and new roles develop • Establish or retire standing committees, as needed

  20. The Library • Maintain a clearinghouse & registry • Content, standards, practices & procedures, tools, services, training resources • Facilitate connections • Among Members & Associates with like interests • Developing relationships based on excellence and expertise

  26. Next Steps • Think about all of this and get your input • Define “success” (and “failure”) for a National Digital Stewardship Alliance • Identify benefits of participation • For institutions • For others • Develop charter by end of 2009
