They're backBy IRENE THOMAIDIS and IAN ROBERTSON, Toronto SunOctober 3, 2010 Three eight-week-old puppies stolen from an east-side backyard Friday were reunited with their "extremely grateful" owners last night after it appears the thieves couldn't handle the heat. A passerby spotted one of the English Bulldogs behind a Mac's convenience store in the Avenue Rd. and Lawrence Ave. neighbourhood around 10:10 p.m. The man saw a duffel bag nearby and upon closer inspection found the two other pups inside. He went into the store and the owner contacted police. "Officers responded and were able to get in touch with the rightful owners, who were extremely grateful and immediately made their way to the store with the mother of the puppies," Toronto Police Const. Prashanan Indiran told the Toronto Sun. Four-year-old mother Matilda nursed her "very hungry" offspring at the store as the dogs' "emotional owners" looked on, Indiran said. The puppies, worth $3,000 each, were stolen during the 30 seconds owner Anne Liu was in her kitchen. "It happened so fast, she didn't see anything," Toronto Police Det. Hunter Smith said earlier yesterday. Liu and her boyfriend bred their English Bulldogs, planning to keep one of the three resulting pups and give the others to family members, Smith said. They decided to have the mother, Matilda, bred, "because we love her and want to continue her line ... She's about halfway through her lifespan. "It is her first litter," she said of the four-year-old dog. Regularly allowed to romp freely in the "very secure" backyard of their Danforth Ave.-Main St. area house, the light brown and white puppies were purloined around 3 p.m. Friday. The story was covered heavily by local media, including torontosun.com, "The thieves probably saw all of the coverage, knew they would mostly likely get caught and so they dumped the puppies behind the store," Indiran said. The police investigation is ongoing.
