  3. Extended family(before industrialisation) • consisted of: the patriarch (oldest male), all relatives, and all people who worked/lived in the house • everyone had to work (also women and children) • workload was equally shared • children were educated by the elderly members of the household • people had a lot of children • bad living situation: not enough space and no privacy

  4. Effects of industrialisation • factories: separation of working and living places • population growth: urbanisation, people moved to the cities to work in factories • transport: England became a close knit community Life of people changed dramatically  development of a modern society

  5. Working-class family • family life: less loving environment, often abusive parents, influenced by alcohol (gin) • nutrition/money: children had to earn money, expenditure often higher than income, no money to afford expensive things, e.g. meat • working place/conditions: people had to work hard, often dangerous work => accidents • living conditions: no privacy, overcrowded tenements, no proper sewage system, rubbish everywhere • children: strapped by overlooker, worked for 12-15 hours a day in mines or factories • 1750: children didn't go to school but after some reforms even poorer children could go to school

  6. Middle-class family • earned the money, didn't spend much time with his family, had a distant relationship to his children • took care of the household and children, didn't work, gave husband a comforting home • more related to mother, good education only mother, father and children are now regarded as members of the family

  7. The new roles of women Women were supposed to be: workers caring mothers house wives (poorer (only richer families families needed could afford that the the additional income) woman stayed at home) hard to combine women didn't accept their roles anymore emancipation movement
