  3. Battle of Vicksburg • Union captured New Orleans and Memphis to control the ends of the Mississippi • 1863 – Grant’s forces lay siege to Vicksburg, Mississippi • After 6 weeks, the Confederates surrendered • Union forces now controlled the Mississippi and cut the South in two

  4. “Total War” • After capturing Vicksburg, Ulysses S. Grant was appointed Commander of the Union Forces • The Union Army waged a total war against the South’s soldiers and civilians • Sheridan destroyed farmland in the Shenandoah Valley • Sherman “marched to the sea” in Georgia and destroyed homes, farms, and train tracks

Effects of the War on the North • Copperheads were northerners who supported the war, but not the way Lincoln was handling it • Draft law angers many – because rich men could pay $300 to have someone take his place • Opposition to the draft led to riots and Lincoln suspended habeas corpus • An income tax was passed and inflation increased prices • Profiteers charged the government excessive prices for goods needed for the war

  6. Hardships of War • Civilians had to labor in factories and on farms to support the war effort • Soldiers faced danger due to more accurate bullets – ¼ of all soldiers were killed or wounded • Medical care was limited and many endured amputations and death from disease • Horrifying conditions at prison camps, such as Andersonville killed many soldiers

  7. The War’s End • Lincoln defeats McClellan in the Presidential election of 1864 • Grant defeats Lee at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, and Petersburg • Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865
