Inventions • Compass • Astrolabe- Sun and stars and horizon (Muslims) • Deep Draft Ships- rode lower in water • Caravel- Light fast sailing ship (Had rudder rather than ores) had lateen sails

In Search of a Route • He wanted to find a water route around Africa to India. • Henry Died, but the Portuguese explores did not abandon their attempts to find the route. • 1488- Bartolomeu Dias became the 1st European to attempt to sail around the southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) • Storms made them turn back.
Vasco de Gama • Set out to India in 1497. • He found that the Muslims were active in Indian Trade • Pedro Cabral followed after Gama and founded Brazil. • In India, the Portuguese created trading centers.
The Spanish • Christopher Columbus was sponsored b Ferdinand and Isabella • He believed that he could sail west around the world from Spain to reach China. • He didn’t know where the Americas lay across the Atlantic • Thought the Caribbean were the Indies • He returned with parrots, jewels, gold, and plants. • Brought NA and baptized them.
Columbus never reached Asia even after three more voyages. • 1502- Amerigo Vespucci sailed along South America and called Columbus’s discovery “A new Land” • 1513 Vasco Nunez de Balboa led an expedition across the Isthmus of Panama.- 1st European to see the Pacific.

Ferdinand Magellan- Born in Portugal, but sailed for Spain. • His five ships reached the Philippines (Killed by Natives) • In early September 8, 1522 18 survivors of the original fleet arrived in Spain. They had circumnavigated the world.
The English • John Cabot- sailed from England to the Atlantic coast (Canada) (His ships disappeared) • Sir Francis Drake- He rounded the tip of South America and explored its west coast.
