  1. Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting 2-1 Holt Algebra 1 I will collect AYR p 73 Notes HW , p 80 #22-56 even, 68, 72, 74 ** Must show your work**

  2. Objective Solve one-step equations in one variable by using addition or subtraction.

  3. Isolate a variable by using inverse operations which "undo" operations on the variable. An equation is like a balanced scale. To keep the balance, perform the same operation on both sides. Addition Subtraction Subtraction Addition

  4. y – 8 = 24 Check Example 1A: Solving Equations by Using Addition Solve the equation. Check your answer. y – 8 = 24 + 8+ 8 Since 8 is subtracted from y, add 8 to both sides to undo the subtraction. y = 32 To check your solution, substitute 32 for y in the original equation. 32 – 824 2424 

  5. n – 3.2 = 5.6 Check Check It Out! Example 1a Solve the equation. Check your answer. n – 3.2 = 5.6 + 3.2+ 3.2 Since 3.2 is subtracted from n, add 3.2 to both sides to undo the subtraction. n = 8.8 To check your solution, substitute 8.8 for n in the original equation. 8.8 – 3.25.6 5.65.6 

  6. m + 17 = 33 Check Example 2A: Solving Equations by Using Subtraction Solve the equation. Check your answer. m +17 = 33 – 17–17 Since 17 is added to m, subtract 17 from both sides to undo the addition. m = 16 To check your solution, substitute 16 for m in the original equation. 16 + 1733 3333 

  7. –5 = k+ 5 Check Check It Out! Example 2b Solve the equation. Check your answer. –5 = k +5 – 5– 5 Since 5 is added to k, subtract 5 from both sides to undo the subtraction. –10= k To check your solution, substitute –10 for k in the original equation. –5 –10+ 5 –5 –5 

  8. –2.3+ m = 7 Check Check It Out! Example 3a Solve –2.3+m = 7. Check your answer. –2.3+m = 7 +2.3+ 2.3 Since –2.3 is added to m, add 2.3 to both sides. m = 9.3 To check your solution, substitute 9.3 for m in the original equation. –2.3 + 9.37 77 

  9. 5 5 5 3 3 3 5 5 3 3 + z = – 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 Since – is added to z, add to both sides. + + 3 3 4 4 – + z = Check 3 5 – + 2 4 4 Check It Out! Example 3b Solve – + z = .Check your answer. z = 2 To check your solution, substitute 2 for z in the original equation. 
