  1. Afghan Energy Project Special Meeting on Cotton Producing Fuel from Cottonseed Panel Bill Allmon Energy and Power Division U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) bill.allmon@us.army.mil Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.

  2. Why ARL is involved? • Energy security for all locations of current and future operations around the globe. • Research use of alternative fuels where petroleum-based fuels are not readily available and/or are dangerous and costly to deliver. (AP Photo/Rahmat Gul)

  3. One Approach Expeller (Michael Jacobs/Courtesy photo) Commercial Generator Ruggedized Commercial Biodiesel Processing System

  4. Accomplishments • Evaluated small expellers. • Lab tested small expellers. • Evaluated small biodiesel processing systems. • Developing an oil identification and quality measuring process. • Created a draft design of a portable extraction system. • Produced a draft CONOPS. • Partnered with the Marine Corp Expeditionary Energy Office (E2O) concerning cottonseed.

  5. Future Directions • Researching the availability of various feedstocks throughout world. • Select the best candidate feedstocks. • Extract oil from these feedstocks and blend with JP8 and/or biodiesel and test operation in generators. • Develop a properly scaled system to extract oil and mix with JP8. • Monitor the development of other alternative fuel areas.

  6. Producing Fuel from Cottonseed • Oil Extraction – Richard Barton • Traditional Processes – Jeremy Butz • Automated Processes – Russell Teall • Magic Processes – Peter Bell • Advanced Processes – Jennifer Holmgren • Discussions
