  2. GOLDEN RULES OF ALGEBRA • here are some reminders to use when solving an equation: • keep the problem balanced • use inverse operations • follow integer rules

  3. CONSTANTS AND COEFFICIENTS constant – a number by itself ex- 7 + x coefficient – a number with variable ex. 15x – 72

  4. ADDITION EQUATIONS x + 5 = 27 - 5 - 5 x = 22 1. use the subtraction property of equality 2. follow integer rules x + (-17) = 74 x = 91 14 + x = 137 x = 123 x + (-23) = 435 x = 458 652 + x = 785 x = 133

  5. SUBTRACTION EQUATIONS x – 13 = 34 + 13 + 13 x = 47 1. use the addition property of equality 2. follow integer rules x - (-43) = 32 x = -11 x - (-67) = 196 x = 129 x - 98 = 57 x - 237 = 456 x = 155 x = 693

  6. MULTIPLICATION EQUATIONS x * (-32) = 256 -32 -32 x = -8 1. use the division property of equality 2. follow integer rules x * 23 = 273 x = 12 x * (- 16) = -480 x = 30 x * 79 = 237 x = 3

  7. DIVISION EQUATIONS x/9 = 36 (9) (9) x = 324 1. use the multiplication property of equality 2. follow integer rules x/18 = 13 x = 234 78/x = 3 x = 26 120/x = 3 x = 40

  8. TWO-STEP EQUATIONS 8x – 19 = 61 + 19 + 19 8x =80 8 8 x = 10 1. solve for any addition or subtraction 2. solve for any multiplication or division 3. follow integer rules

  9. 17x + 24 = 126 x = 20x - (-32) = 112 x = -72x – 3 = 573 x = q
