How Sunscreens Work Sunscreens block or absorb ultraviolet light rays All sunscreens are labeled with an SPF
What is SPF? Sun Protection Factor: measures the length of time a product protects against skin reddening from UVB rays, compared to the length of time with no protection.
What are UVB’s? • Short wave solar waves • B for sunburn • Main cause of skin cancers • SPF rating applies to UVB rays only
What are UVA’s? • Long-wave solar rays • A for Aging, cause wrinkling • Add to UVB’s cancer causing potential.
Example If it takes 10 minutes without protection to begin burning, using an SPF of 15 prevents burning 15 times longer- about 2 1/2 hours
Be Sunscreen Savvy • Use an SPF of 15 or higher • Apply 30 minutes before going • outside • Use liberal and frequent applications, • especially if you swim or perspire
