Elements Chapter 2
Atoms – the fundamental component of all matter • Element – a substance containing only one kind of atom • Pure substance – a material composed of only one type of element or compound
Compounds • Two or more elements can combine together to form compounds • Compounds are pure even though they contain multiple elements
Water contains hydrogen and oxygen • H2O • Sand is a compound made of silicon dioxide • SiO2
For compounds the smallest unit of the compound is called a molecule. • Compounds have different properties than the original elements
Impure mixtures • Many substances we commonly use are actually mixtures of multiple elements and compounds • Heterogeneous and homogeneous
Heterogeneous mixtures • These mixtures are obvious since you can easily see differences
Homogeneous • The mixture looks, tastes, feels, etc, the same throughout • Can you think of some examples?
Homogeneous mixtures are also called solutions • Solid, liquid, and gas
Mixtures (heterogeneous or homogeneous) can be separated, but elements and compounds can not.
Changes in matter • Physical vs. Chemical • Physical properties are the set of properties that define the material • Mass • Color • Density
Physical change • Commonly known as a phase change
The chemical properties of a material determine its ability to interact with other materials (elements or compounds)
Chemical changes • A chemical reaction is a change involving the chemical properties of two materials • Reactants Products
Periodic table of elements • Now that you all know about compounds and mixtures we should look at what makes a compound
Chemical formulas • This is the shorthand showing what elements make up a compound • Organic compounds- • Inorganic compounds-
Chemical equations • The chemical change can be show with a chemical equation with the reactants and products displayed as chemical formulas
