Part 1 Gaining Approval
Getting Started • Work with your department and committee • Get IRB approval through Research and Sponsored Programs • Conduct research • Defend your work
Basic References • UWF Thesis and Dissertation Guide • Discipline of Department Style Guide, e.g., • APA Publication Manual • Turabian • Chicago Style Manual • MLA
Deadlines for Spring 2013 • Thesis submitted to UMI/Graduate School by March 1, 2013 • Dissertation submitted to UMI/Graduate School by February 8, 2013 UMI: etdadmin.com/uwf 1-877-408-5027

The Routing Process • Approval by Committee • Submit to Department • Student submits the following to Graduate School: • Transmittal form • Signature pages • Student uploads thesis/dissertation to UMI • TD Coordinator returns reviewed copy to student for revision, if necessary • Student makes any recommended changes and then resubmits to the Graduate School via UMI. • If approved, the Dean of the Graduate School signs the signature page and the student is cleared for graduation.

Common Errors • Table of Contents does not match pagination or structure of paper • Tables and figures in text do not match number/title in List of Tables and List of Figures • References not in proper format • References and bibliography do not match • Title and author, spelling, etc. • Spelling • Column alignment in tables
Common Errors cont’d • Margins • Placement of page numbers • Signature page format and titles of signatories • Heading style and placement • Cutting and pasting or combining seminar papers w/o proofreading

Continuous Registration • You must be continuously registered for thesis/dissertation hours until document is approved by the Graduate School and final copy is submitted to UMI. • Refer to the Graduate Catalog for specific requirements for theses and dissertations.
Outstanding Master's Thesis Award • In order to recognize outstanding thesis research and to encourage more students to conduct thesis research, the Graduate Council has established an Outstanding Master's Thesis award. • Call for applications announced in Fall semester (for theses completed during previous academic year). • Awards will be made at the Spring Honors Convocation.
