  2. Renaissance means “rebirth” • The rebirth of Greek/Roman thought and art. • Began in Italy. • Italy was the merchant of eastern goods (Middle East & Asia) for western Europe.

  3. The Italians picked up new ideas from the Muslims and “rediscovered” Greek/Roman learning from monasteries and Arabic scholars.

  4. European thinking changes • From the importance of the group to the importance of the individual. • From heavenly rewards to earthly pleasures.

  5. European thinking changes • From afterlife to this life on Earth. • From the religious to the secular-worldly concerns of the here and now are more important than the spiritual concerns of the future.

  6. Humanism • Movement that focused on human potential and achievements.

  7. Renaissance Man • Ideal individual the tried to master every area of study. • Painting • Politics • Writing • Poetry • Wrestling • Sword fighting • Horseback riding • Musician • Dancer

  8. Patrons • Wealthy merchants and church leaders that supported the arts. • Medici family

  9. Perspective • Art technique that shows three dimensions.

  10. Vernacular • Native language-everyday language spoken in the streets, fields, and homes. • French • German • Italian • Spanish • Dutch • NOT LATIN OR GREEK
