  3. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, in Collinsville, Illinois, is located on the Mississippi River floodplain, across from St. Louis, Missouri.

  4. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site • the largest pre- Columbian archaeological site north of Mexico • occupied mainly during the Mississippian period (800–1400 AD) - covered nearly 1,600 ha and included 120 mounds. • Cahokia site was the regional centre for the Mississippian culture with many satellite communities, villages and farmsteads around it.
