3. Why Green Services? The institutional cleaning industry contributes $150 billion annually to the economy and uses 5 billion pounds of chemicals, many of which are known hazards to human health and the environment. Based on worker's compensation data from Washington State, six out of 100 custodians are injured on the job by cleaning chemicals every year at a cost of $725 in medical expenses and lost time per reported injury. Improving indoor air quality through better ventilation, better cleaning, and the use of safer cleaning products, could improve worker productivity by between 0.5 percent and 5 percent, an annual productivity gain of $30 billion to $150 billion.

4. Why Green Buildings? Green buildings use resources - energy, water, materials, and land more efficiently and effectively and they provide healthier environments for working, learning and living. By building green, developers can save money, reduce construction costs and create sustainable buildings. Owners save money by reducing operation and maintenance costs and lowering utility bills.

What are the steps to a Green Building? • Product • Chemicals – Certification Criteria – Prohibited compounds • Mixing/Dilution Centers – Reduce packaging, safe and economical, • ready-to use • Equipment – Noise, durability, particulate filtration • Paper Products – Recycle content • Processes • Recycling • Occupant Interaction – Announcements, newsletters, bulletin board • Reengineered work practices All cleaning procedures should be modified with the health and safety of building occupants in mind. The goal will be both to protect health, and focus on appearances.

Product Strategy: UNICCO’s commitment… • …extends to the chemicals, paper products and equipment it uses. • Our strong preference is to use Green Seal Certified products from • national providers. • Green Seal does not offer certification in all categories, and in those • instances, environmentally preferred alternatives comply with EPA • and California codes for VOC content and have been recommended. • Green Seal Certified products are strongly recommended because: • 1. They have undergone the rigorous process of certification • 2. Many customers identify the Green Seal logo as being “proof” • that a product is “green”
