  1. ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR CS3 Chapter 2Creating Text and Gradients Chapter 2

  2. Chapter Objectives • Create and format text • Flow text into an object • Position text on a path • Create colors and gradients • Apply colors and gradients to text • Adjust a gradient and create a drop shadow Chapter 2

  3. Create and Format Text LESSON 1 • Creating type • Create text anywhere • Select the Type Tool • Click the artboard and start typing or click and drag Type Tool to create a text box • Use the Vertical Type Tool to create vertical type Chapter 2

  4. Character panel LESSON 1 Font family list arrow Font style list arrow Leading list arrow Font size list arrow Tracking list arrow Kerning list arrow Horizontal Scale text box Vertical Scale text box Underline button Character Rotation text box Set the baseline shift list arrow Strikethrough button Chapter 2

  5. Paragraph panel LESSON 1 Justify with last line aligned centered Justify with last line aligned left Justify with last line aligned right Align right Align center Align left Justify all lines Left indent text box Right indent text box First-line indent text box Space after paragraph text box Space before paragraph text box Chapter 2

  6. Create and Format Text LESSON 1 Baseline Leading 50% horizontal scale 50 % vertical scale Examples of text formatting Chapter 2

  7. Create and Format Text LESSON 1 Examples of kerning and tracking Chapter 2

  8. Flow Text into an Object LESSON 2 • Filling an object with text • Use the Area Type Tool and Vertical Area Type Tool to flow text into any shape you create • Text in object can be formatted as usual • You can manipulate object just like any other Chapter 2

  9. Flow Text into an Object LESSON 2 • Using Rulers, Guides, and the Grid • Illustrator has two built-in rulers that run along top and left side of document window • Create ruler guides and place on artboard by placing mouse pointer on top of ruler and dragging on to artboard • As you drag ruler, guide will emerge • On release, guide will be position at that point Chapter 2

  10. Flow Text into an Object LESSON 2 • Using Rulers, Guides, and the Grid • To view rulers • Click View on menu bar • Click Show Rulers • Lock and hide guides temporarily • Click View on menu bar • Point to Guides – all Guide menu commands shown • Grid is another tool to align objects on artboard • Defined in Guides & Grid section of Preferences dialog box Chapter 2

  11. Flow Text into an Object LESSON 2 • Making guides • Select any object and make it into guide • Use Make Guide command on View menu • You can also click and drag mouse pointer from each ruler to the artboard Chapter 2

  12. Using the Path Type Tools Type along straight or curved path using the Type on a Path Tool or Vertical Type on a Path Tool Move text along path ‘Flip’ text to make it run in opposite direction – on opposite side of path Change baseline shift to modify distance text’s baseline is above or below path Position Text on a Path LESSON 3 Chapter 2

  13. Position Text on a Path LESSON 3 Text flipped across a path Text on a Path Chapter 2

  14. Using the Gradient panel Create Colors and Gradients LESSON 4 Type list arrow Location text box Gradient Fill box Gradient Slider Angle text box Stops Chapter 2

  15. Using the Gradient panel Point at which two colors meet in equal measure called midpoint Represented by diamond above slider, which is called Gradient Slider Need not be positioned evenly between start and end Change look by moving Gradient Slider to change midpoint location Swatches panel contains standard gradients that come with software Create Colors and Gradients LESSON 4 Chapter 2

  16. Using the Gradient panel To create your own gradients Click object filled with existing gradient Modify existing gradient in Gradient panel Change beginning and ending colors Change midpoint Add additional colors or remove colors Define a gradient as linear or radial Linear gradient can be positioned: Left to right Up and down On any angle – change angle by entering new value in Angle text box in Gradient panel Create Colors and Gradients LESSON 4 Chapter 2

  17. Using the Color panel Color panel is where you move sliders to mix new colors for fills, strokes, and gradients Default CMYK or RGB depending on mode selected You can also type values directly into text boxes Create Colors and Gradients LESSON 4 Chapter 2

  18. Color panel Create Colors and Gradients LESSON 4 Current fill and stroke colors CMYK color values None CMYK Spectrum Sliders Chapter 2

  19. Apply Colors and Gradients to Text LESSON 5 • Applying fills and strokes to text • By default text is generated with black fill and no stroke • To change color of text, select it by highlighting it with Type Tool or switch to Selection Tool • With Selection Tool, text is selected as single object and any color change affects text globally • To change fill or stroke of individual character, select with Type Tool Fill color Stroke color Chapter 2

  20. Apply Colors and Gradients to Text LESSON 5 • Converting text to outlines • To fill text with a gradient: • Convert text into an object by selecting text, then using Create Outlines command on Type menu • Letterforms become standard Illustrator objects with anchor points and paths • Create Outlines makes it possible to create document with text without fonts • Once text converted to outlines, you can no longer change typeface • To change, go to Character panel before converting to outlines Chapter 2

  21. Apply Colors and Gradients to Text LESSON 5 Outlines filled with a gradient Each outline is filled with the gradient Chapter 2

  22. Adjust a Gradient and Create a Drop Shadow LESSON 6 • Using the Gradient Tool • Gradient Tool used to manipulate gradient fills • Select an object with gradient fill • Drag Gradient Tool over the object • Where you begin dragging and where you end determines length of blend from starting to ending color • Using the Gradient Tool • For linear gradients, angle you drag determines angle blend fills object • Apply same gradient to multiple objects • Select object, use Gradient Tool to extend across all objects Chapter 2

  23. Adjust a Gradient and Create a Drop Shadow LESSON 6 Examples of different angles and lengths of a gradient fill created with the Gradient Tool Chapter 2

  24. Adjust a Gradient and Create a Drop Shadow LESSON 6 • Adding a drop shadow • To apply a drop shadow to text • Copy text • Paste copy behind it • Fill copy with darker color • Use keyboard arrows to move it so it is offset from original Chapter 2

  25. Chapter Summary • Lesson 4 • Use the Gradient panel • Use the Color panel • Add colors and gradients to the Swatches panel • Lesson 5 • Apply fills and strokes to text • Convert text to outlines • Lesson 6 • Use the Gradient Tool • Add a drop shadow • Lesson 1 • Create type • Format text • Hide objects • Lesson 2 • Fill an object with text • Lock objects • Use rulers, guides, and the grid • Make guides • Lesson 3 • Use the Path Type Tool Chapter 2
